Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Henry Wampah is likely to face possible contempt charges for his failure to show up before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee for the second consecutive day.
The governor was summoned before the Committee yesterday to respond to queries on the Bank’s audited accounts. But he failed to show up.
On Wednesday, Deputy Governor Millison Narh appeared in his stead with the explanation that his boss was attending to another official function.
He however sent the apologies of the Governor to the Committee but the members were not in the mood to accept apologies.
They wanted the Governor himself to explain what they say are the inconsistencies in the finances of the Bank.
Joy News' Parliamentary correspondent Elton John Brobbey reported the Governor's no show for the second time got members infuriated.
The Vice chairman of the committee and MP for Atwima Mponua Isaac Asiamah was the most vocal in expressing Parliament's disappointment in the failure of the Governor to appear before them.
He said the Governor has no justification for not appearing before Parliament and must be sanctioned.
He said no other call is more important than the call by Parliament and the Governor cannot say he was attending to another official duty.
"The committee has the powers of a high court. When the High Court summons you do you tell the court you are attending another function," he queried.
He said except the President, no other official of state can refuse the call by Parliament.
The Governor is answerable to Parliament. When Parliament calls you, you are obliged to come, he insisted.
He called on the Chairman of the Committee to suspend sitting until the Governor appears before the committee.
Isaac Asiamah said Parliament will have to compel the Governor to appear before the committee.
According to Joy News' Elton John Brobbey, the Committee has decided to give the Governor the last opportunity to appear before it on Thursday.
