The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company – BOST has commenced processes that would enable it extend gas pipelines to the northern parts of Ghana.
The development could go a long way to reduce the cost of production for such firms, and could eventually push utility tariffs downwards.
This means that Independent Power Producers who have already, or are yet to set up generating plants in other parts of the country, like Kumasi and Buipe, would soon have access to gas from the gas enclave in the Western Region.
Speaking with Joy Business, Technical and Compliance Manager for BOST, Ato Wilson said an international tendering process towards this project has already been initiated.
He indicated that BOST is “engaged currently in executing the international tender for the Front-End Engineering Design – FEED for the gas transmission networks. Once that process which we are currently engaged in is completed, we will roll out the initial design of the FEED.”
He added that after a year, BOST will commence the execution of the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning – EPCC process, which is the actual construction of the pipelines once the FEED is completed.
“We are looking at extending the existing network which has been built from Abuadze to Atuabo and Ghana Gas is currently building from Asiama to Prestea. We are also looking to extend that network to Kumasi where there is demand and then we will move further to Buipe” Mr. Wilson added.
BOST also considering extending its infrastructure from Takoradi to Tema and according to Mr. Wilson, this is to “ensure that the gas that is in the Western Region is able to be moved to the Eastern side.”
