A 12-year-old boy identified as David has been swept away by the Okludu River following heavy rainfall at Kasoa American Town in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region on Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses told Adom News the tragic incident occurred when David attempted to pick up his siblings from school after the downpour.
His slippers slipped into a gutter, and in his attempt to retrieve them, he accidentally fell into the raging river and was carried away by the strong currents.
The whereabouts of the young boy remain unknown as search efforts continue.
The Ewe Chief of American Town, Togbui Amamasor, recounted the heartbreaking moment to the media, describing how helpless residents were as the floodwaters swept the boy away.
Meanwhile, the Assemblyman for the American Town Electoral Area, Shaddrack Boakye Yiadom, confirmed that a search was carried out late into the night but yielded no results.
He added that traditional leaders in the area are expected to perform rituals to aid in locating the boy’s remains.
Authorities and residents have been urged to exercise caution around flood-prone areas as the rainy season intensifies.
