The Breman Asikuma Senior High School in the Central Region has temporarily been closed down as a result of violent protest by students against water shortage on campus.
The headmistress, Mrs Comfort Akumaning, who made this known to the Ghana News Agency at Breman Asikuma, said the problem started when a bore hole at the boy's dormitory developed a fault, preventing the flow of water for four days.
She said the authorities therefore asked the girls to supply water to their male counterparts between 3.30 and 6.30 hours, but they flouted the directive and were rather doing so around 9.00 hours and were ordered to stop.
Mrs Akumaning said last Friday morning the boys locked themselves up in their dormitories with the intention of not attending classes.
She said a message was sent to the District Director of Education and District Chief Executive and when the students spotted the officials, including the District Police Commander on the campus, they went on a rampage.
Mrs Akumaning said the boys started throwing missiles at the officials, leading to the dispatch of police reinforcement from the District Police Headquarters to control the situation.
She said the school was closed down in consultation with the District Director of Education, District Chief Executive and the Parent Teacher Association to avoid loss of life and further destruction of school property.
Mrs Akumaning said the school would be re-opened on Saturday, February 20 and the students would be compelled to sign a bond.
