The Nkoranza District Water and Sanitation Project, says it has successfully tested a herbal preparation that cures guinea worm infections.
District Coordinator of the project James Sarfo Acheampong says victims of the disease at Techiman and Nkoranza on whom the herbal preparation was administered were cured within five days.
The Ghana News Agency quotes Mr Sarfo Acheampong as saying that a herbalist from a local NGO, Mr. Williams Sei developed the medicine.
He said a request has gone to the Tamale Municipal Assembly, where the disease is endemic, for a wider test.
If the efficacy of the drug is proved, it will be a major source of relief for the health ministry which has been battling to eradicate the spread of the disease.
Ghana’s is the second most endemic guinea infested country, next only to Sudan.
