Mexican High Commissioner and Aviation Minister have started bilateral discussions that could see airlines offering direct flights between Ghana and Mexico.
This comes at a time that the Kotoka International Airport’s Terminal 3 project is completed. The terminal has the capacity to process up to five million passengers a year hence the need to attract more airlines to operate in Ghana.
According to María de los Angeles Arriola Aguirre, Mexico like Ghana is also set to have a new airport by 2020 with a capacity to process 95 million passengers thus the need for both countries to collaborate and make efficient use of the facilities.
“Considering that Accra is a hub, what we want to do is to start a bilateral agenda between both governments and Airline companies to allow us consolidate the first direct flight from Accra to Mexico and Mexico to Accra once our Airport is completed,” she said during a courtesy call on the Aviation Minister.
This move according to the High Commissioner will open up Africa to the Latin Americas and vice versa.
On her part the Aviation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah said she will expedite action to bring this initiative to fruition.
She said, “We have the Bilateral Air Services Agreements that we sign with countries and we will check out the one between Ghana and Mexico and get it signed in readiness and we can continue to talk along those lines so the airlines can fix it into their programs.”
The establishment of a direct flight between Ghana and Mexico is also expected to boost trade and tourism between Africa and the Latin Americas.
