An Accra Circuit Court has granted an ¢80,000 bail with two sureties to a businessman accused of insurance fraud.

In addition, the Court presided over by Mrs Afia Owusua Appiah ordered Thomas Takyi-Bonsu to deposit his passport with the Court's registry.

The accused person has denied defrauding Enterprise Insurance. He will make his next appearance on March 21, 2022.

Police Inspector Samuel Ahiabor told the Court that Nana Adjoa Serwaa Addo, the complainant, is the supervisor of Enterprise Insurance Airport Branch.

Takyi-Bonsu is a businessman and an agent of Enterprise Insurance thus during August 2021, the complainant upon regular checks detected that claims on vehicles with Registration numbers GR 2679-21 and GW 4142-19 belonging to one McDaniels Kojo, a witness in the case, and few other vehicles were fraudulently obtained.

He said a report was made to the Police and the accused who happened to be an agent who made the claims on behalf of the vehicle owners, was arrested for investigation.

The Prosecution said during the investigation it was established that the accused person approached McDaniels Kojo in March 2021 and informed him of an ongoing promotion by Enterprise Insurance for their customers.

The Court heard that the witness became convinced and handed over his vehicles to the complainant to run the promotion on his behalf.

Chief Inspector Ahiabor said the accused person managed to dismantle the front view of the vehicles and presented pictures of the same to the insurance company together with two other vehicles with registration numbers GG 1404-20 and GE 9517-11 as third party vehicles involved in the accident.

He said without due diligence from the company, they paid claims of ¢434,700 and ¢11,000 respectively, for the two main vehicles and ¢10,000 for the two-third party vehicles to the accused person.

The accused person after receiving the money gave out ¢8,000 and ¢2,500 for each vehicle to the witness McDaniels Kojo as his win from the promotion and on July 13, 2021, the accused managed to remove parts of eight vehicles as stated on the charge sheet and presented same to the company as theft.

The Prosecution said on the same day, the company inspected the said vehicles whose parts were removed by the accused and made a payment of ¢5,000 for each vehicle and a total of ¢40,000 as theft claims for the eight vehicles.

It was established that the accused in total received an amount of ¢495,700 from Enterprise Insurance Company.

He admitted the offence in his cautioned statement and refunded ¢62,000 to the police.

After investigation, the accused person was charged with the offence in his cautioned statement.
