Calm has been restored in Ntotroso, Ahafo Region, following an attempted security breach at Newmont’s mining site on Wednesday night, where individuals allegedly tried to steal gold.
The ensuing confrontation with the police resulted in three deaths and four injured persons.
A statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, said the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, worked closely with the Regional Police team and local leaders throughout the night to defuse tensions.
Since then, no further escalation or reprisals have been reported.
A special investigative team from Accra has been dispatched to investigate the incident, while additional police reinforcements have been sent to maintain security and order.
The deceased, who were Muslims, are being prepared for release to their families for burial according to Islamic rites.
The police assured the public that efforts are ongoing to ensure peace and uphold the rule of law.
