One of the five persons who dragged the Electoral Commission (EC) to court for non-implementation of the Representation of Peoples Amendment Act (ROPAA) over the years has expressed delight at the commission’s announcement to do so this year.
Mr. Kofi Boateng told JoyNews, welcomed the EC’s announcement saying the right of Ghanaians living abroad is one he and his colleagues have fought to be implemented.
He, however, added that until concrete steps are taken by the EC to make their announcement materialise, they cannot “pop champagnes yet.”
Director of Electoral Services, Serebuor Quaicoe in an interview with JoyNews’ Evans Mensah that the EC is awaiting a report from the Committee established to oversee the application of the act.
That Committee - made up of all political parties - according to Dr. Quaicoe, has engaged stakeholders in Ghana and abroad and is expected to present a report on its work.
While the commission waits, he disclosed that “in the meantime, we have submitted our budget and even drafted a Constitutional Instrument (C.I) so that when the report comes and it is favourable, then all things being equal, it would be rolled out.”
The C.I, Dr. Quaicoe talks about, will be sent to Parliament next week and is likely to mature in time to enable the EC to register Ghanaians living abroad for the elections.
Reacting to these comments, Mr. Boateng, although expressing satisfaction at the steps taken, said they cannot jubilate until the C.I. has been sent to parliament.
