The Member of Parliament (MP) for Okere, Dan Kweku Botwe is wondering if the nation's security institutions have the ability to protect the citizenry should Ghana encounter rebels aggression. His comments come on the back of the Agogo-Fulani crisis which seems to threaten the peace of the area and the nation as a whole. The nomads are accused of rape, murder and other inhuman treatment. Though they have been given a 14-day ultimatum to exit the locality, the two national security chiefs - Col. Gbevlo Lartey and Gen. Nunoo Mensah - seem to be in disagreement as to the eviction of the herdsmen. Mr Dan Botwe, who believes the country's security has been compromised, finds it difficult to accept that the country's security apparatus have still not been able to resolve the Agogo crisis for peace to return to the area. Contributing to discussions on Peace FM's Kokrokoo Wednesday, he charged the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), National Security, Police Service and the Military for failing to secure the safety of residents in Agogo, asking if they can save the nation if it is attacked by rebels. "We train policemen; we have CID…by now we should have a full grasp of what it is in the Agogo area [that is causing the problem]. How about the BNI… and Military Intelligence?" he asked, lamenting: "Ghanaians are being killed; Ghanaians are dying; what is the work of our security [agencies]?" The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP wondered how Ghanaian security personnel excel during peacekeeping missions abroad but failed to keep the peace in a small locality like Agogo. Meanwhile a National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart, Fiifi Ankrah, who was a co-panelist on the programme, suggested that the Fulani herdsmen and their cattle - instead of being driven out of the country -should be caged in a vast land to prevent them from causing chaos in any other part of the country. Mfantseman West MP, Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, advocated a law to curtail the movement of the nomads and their cattle, saying the practice where animals move about to graze was outmoded.
