A new animated cartoon movie aimed at reviving the country’s folktale about the imaginary Kwaku Ananse has unveiled by the Director of the Geothe-Institut, Ellenure Sylla in Accra.
The two hour movie, ‘Ananse Must Die’ was written by Cecil Jones Abban, a graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and is being produced by Parables Productions, a Christian broadcasting organization.
It opens with a unique African tune which is the theme song. The movie takes the mischievous Ananse from the usual village setting where he always steals from farm to a city called ‘Akwaaba’-a land rich with stories.
A group headed by Ananse was tasked by the almighty to weave stories for the people of the land but not satisfied with the job, Ananse left the group.
He became a contractor which put him in a good stand to carry out his mischievous acts and as a result attracted newspaper headlines in the city.
He is now wanted and as such he must die. But would he die? This is the story line of the animated cartoon.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Jones Abban noted that animation in Ghana has become more of commercial work than movie, saying "comparing what is happening in the outside world, there is much more to do in animation in the country".
He said that animation can be used in so many ways especially in addressing the moral decadence which has plagued the country.
He said the reason for choosing Ananse for the animation is because of its popularity. He said that the movie would be produced on DVD, VCD and VHF cassettes and also do series for television stations.
David Yeboah, Chief Executive of Inswic, observed that grandmothers and mothers now do not have time to tell their children stories anymore as were in the case in the olden days "saying they only tell us stories about Johny Quest, Dexters etc."
