Catholic priests, others robbed at gun point

Two catholic priests and their female colleague are among victims of armed robbery attack on the Abono-Kuntenase Road, near Lake Bosomtwe.

Three armed men blocked the road and robbed motorists and commuters of cash and other valuables at gunpoint over the weekend.

The Roman Fathers and a Sister whose identity police are keeping out of public space were on their way to Abono for a prayer meeting when the incident occurred.

Members of the Obuasi Diocese of the Catholic Church are in a week-long prayer session at the Church’s prayer sanctuary known as the Grotto.

A number of them suffered the ordeal at the hands of the robbers who took an unspecified amount of money mobile phones, among others from them.

At least, four taxi cabs and other private cars were involved in Friday’s incident which occurred at about 5:50 p.m.

Nhyira FM sources say two of the robbers dressed in long robe known as ‘jalabia’ in Hausa were spotted around the scene of the incident a few hours before the attack.

Residents of Abono upon hearing the attack later mobilized themselves to pursue the robbers who fled the scene before the arrival of the police.

Kuntenase District Commander, ASP Amponsah Asiamah confirmed the incident to Nhyira FM.

According to him, his outfit had received a letter requesting for police protection ahead of the climax of the church’s prayer meeting on Saturday and Sunday.
