The Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) Ghana has concluded a six-week training programme for young climate activists and ecopreneurs in Accra, meant to equip the next generation with the skills and knowledge necessary to create climate-smart solutions, facilitate resilience-building, and enhance mitigation actions in the face of climate change.
The programme which constituted five weeks of online training and a one-week in-person workshop was lauded for its hands-on and comprehensive approach to enhancing the capacity of young people for climate action.

Environmental scientist and Country Advisor to the CDKN Ghana programme, Prof. Chris Gordon, emphasised the unique opportunities that climate change presents for young people.
"Climate change offers a unique chance for young people to take action and create employment opportunities for themselves," Prof. Gordon stated.
He highlighted CDKN's commitment to empowering the youth to address climate change at the local, national, and global levels, ensuring they are equipped with practical skills rather than just theoretical knowledge.
The six-week programme covered topics such as climate policy, communication, advocacy and career development that provided participants the tools to design and implement community-based solutions.
The programme also brought together experienced mentors from key institutions including the Environmental Protection Agency, University of Ghana, the Multimedia Group, Youth Climate Council (YCC) Ghana, Strategic Youth Network for Development (SYND) and seasoned private consultants who provided guidance throughout the sessions.
The mentoring sessions provided the opportunity for learning and skills sharing for participants to become effective climate advocates and entrepreneurs within their communities and beyond.

CDKN Ghana Programme Coordinator, Ms. Valerie Nutakor, explained that the programme aimed to provide leadership training, mentorship, and advocacy skills to young climate-conscious individuals, enabling them to become champions for vulnerable groups in their communities.
She emphasised CDKN’s role in developing the capacity of young people across Africa in building resilient solutions, and actively participating in policy processes.

Some of the participants expressed that the training sessions have been useful for their skill development as activists and entrepreneurs.
"This programme has enhanced my approach to communicating climate change and providing climate-smart solutions. The training honed my skills, which I can apply in my engineering projects", Gabriel Domoninge Naa(Participant and CDKN Awardee, Ashie University).
A CDKN Ecopreneur fellow, Ernest Mensah, also reflected on the opportunities the programme presented to him as an entrepreneur who has been equipped to actively drive his ongoing climate solutions in his community.

The CDKN Ghana training programme stands as a testament to the power of youth-led initiatives in combating climate change. By equipping young people with the necessary skills and knowledge, the programme has not only empowered them to take action but also inspired them to become leaders and advocates in their communities.
The CDKN Ghana Programme Lead, Dr. Prince Ansah, in his closing remarks, highlighted the necessity of mentorship and leadership dialogues curated by young people for young people that is inclusive, solution oriented and leverages on the experiences of the older generation.
As the effects of climate change continue to manifest, such programmes are crucial in driving meaningful change and ensuring a sustainable future for all.
