A cement distributor and his two assistants have been arrested by the police for mixing sand with cement and rebagging them for sale. The three were caught in the act at Frafraha, near Adenta in Accra last Friday when they had stocked a huge pile of cement and sand which they were mixing for rebagging.The three, who are assisting the police in investigations, are Mark Martey, 33, owner of a 40-foot container, Sulley Yusif, 31, and Francis Tetteh, 37, both shop assistants .The Crime Officer of the Madina Police, DSP Appenteng Baffour, said on July 27, 2007, the police had information that some men were mixing cement with sand inside their container shop at Fafraha.He said the informant had gone to the shop to buy some of the cement and was surprised to see them adulterating the product, so he quickly rushed to inform the police.DSP Baffour said a team of police personnel were quickly dispatched to the spot where they caught the owner of the shop and his two assistant in the act.He said at the time of their arrest they had rebagged 20 bags while a number of empty bags remained to be filled.He said the three were arrested and, together with samples of the product brought to the police station for questioning.The crime officer said upon interrogation, they claimed that they were rebagging the product for their personal use at their building site but when they were asked why they did not send it to the site to mix it, they could offer any explanation.He said specimen of the product had been sent to the Ghana Standard Board for laboratory testing and report while the three were currently assisting the police in their investigations.DSP Baffour advised members of the public to check the seal of cement products before purchasing them and report anybody they found to have tampered with any product to the police for quick action.Source: Daily Graphic
