The Commissioner of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) E.R.K Lanyon has ordered the immediate transfer of all personnel at the western frontier.
A statement signed by the CEPS commissioner indicated that those being transferred would be replaced with new officers whose backgrounds have been thoroughly investigated.
This move follows the release of an investigative feature by ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas indicating that some customs officials and other security operatives aid in the smuggling of Ghana’s cocoa to neighboring countries.
Eight CEPS personnel and a police officer have so far been arrested by the police.
Though Mr Aremeyaw is impressed with the swift arrest of the nine officials and described it as “a good start”, he thinks much more could be done considering that over forty personnel were implicated in his investigative piece.
Speaking to Citi News, Public Affairs Director of CEPS, Annie Anipa said the commission will identify the rest of its officials involved in the scandal and hand them over to the police.
Meanwhile, the management of CEPS, in their bid to clean the system of such corrupt practices, would pay unannounced visits to field officers on duty to monitor their conduct and performance, the statement said.
It added that the Internal Affairs, Intelligence and Preventive Units of CEPS have intensified surveillance on field officers at critical operational areas at the borders.
