Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has called off its strike action after government’s promise to pay their allowances by March 2018.

The association earlier in November 2017 called on its members to lay down their tools over unpaid arrears due them since October 2016.

In 2012, the Colleges of Education (COE) were migrated to a tertiary status per the COE Act 847 and according to CETAG, this should have caused an upward adjustment in their salaries but since October 2016, these monies haven’t been paid them.

Speaking to Joy News on Wednesday, the General Secretary of CETAG, Prince Obeng-Himah says the strike has been called off after a meeting with government.

“We were waiting on the government to give us return documents spelling when they will pay us and after a six to seven-hour meeting with the authorities and some ministers that matter, they came clear with that document”, he told Joy News.

He added that by that agreement, “we felt we have been met somehow”.

Prior to this latest development, CETAG said a directive from National Labor Commission (NLC) asking the Ministry of Finance to pay the arrears within two weeks, also fell on death ears.

Academic activity is expected to resume in all 38 Colleges of Education across the country that became dormant due to the strike action.
