Nana Afrifa Boasah II, chief of Amanchia in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District, has suggested the enactment of byelaws by the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies that would compel irresponsible parents and guardians to send their children to school.
He said the byelaws would not only increase enrolment in basic schools but would also fulfill the access and participation component of the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE).
Nana Afrifa Boasah was speaking at the inauguration of the local School Management Committee (SMC) of which he is the chairman at Amanchia near Nkawie on Tuesday.
He expressed concern about the drop out rate in some rural communities and called on the affected communities to institute urgent measures to address the problem.
He said the education of the child was a collective responsibility of all Ghanaians and advised stakeholders in education to put in place programmes and activities that would sustain the interest of children in education.
Nana Afrifa Boasah appealed to traditional rulers to release adequate land for education purposes and cautioned them against the sale of school lands.Source GNA
