The chiefs and people of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area in the Central Region over the weekend staged a peaceful demonstration at Gomoa Afransi to protest against the Member of vParliament for Gomoa East, Mr Richmond Sam Quarm.
The people claimed the MP opposed the President’s decision to make Gomoa Afransi the capital of the newly created Gomoa East District.
The demonstrators led by the Omanhene, Nana Okatakyie Yamfo Krampah X, Divisional Chiefs and Queen mothers and Asafo Companies paraded through the principle streets of the town chanting war songs.
They carried placards some of which read; “You cease to be Gomoa East MP today” and “Quarm Stop Your Dirty Politics”.
Speaking after the procession attended by the 33 Assembly members from the area, the Omanhene said it was unfortunate that the MP should oppose the decision by the President to make Afransi the capital of the new district.
“It is alleged that Mr Quarm had vowed to oppose the nomination of Afransi as the capital instead of Gomoa Potsin,” Nana Krampah stated and stressed that “the people had voted for him to become the MP for the development of the area and not to divide the people”.
He pointed out that the President had done the will of the people and the MP should not create friction between the area and the sister traditional area, Gomoa Akyempim.
The Omanhene stated that all was set for the inauguration of the District at Afransi on February 29, but had to be postponed indefinitely and expressed the hope that the dispute over the location of the capital would be resolved amicably.
Nana Ogyedom Obranu Kwesi-Atta VI, Chief of Afransi, said the chiefs and people felt honoured by the President for naming Afransi as the capital of the new district and expressed the hope that the impasse would be resolved soon.
