The Paramount chief of Nsawkaw in Brong Ahafo region, Nana Kutu Ayim Baffour and his divisional chiefs have kicked against the election of Hon. Joe Danquah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Tain, as the parliamentary candidate for the December polls.
According to The Chronicle, the traditional rulers claim the MP is too arrogant and has been disrespectful towards them, therefore they would no more accept his candidature. On July 20, this year, the paramount chief summoned newsmen and NPP party executives to Nsawkaw to apparently announce their decision about the MP to them, but the meeting had to be called off at the last hour.
After waiting for several hours, an emissary came to inform the party executives and the newsmen that the intended meeting had clashed with the proposed visit to the Omanhene's palace by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, John Mahama, and to avoid a clash, the meeting had to be called off.
Before this announcement was made, the NPP and NDC supporters who had gathered at the precincts of the palace were already hurling insults at each other.
The Regional Organiser of NPP, Mr. Kofi Darko quickly intervened and asked his supporters to leave the scene to avoid any nasty incident.
The Paramount stool later issued a press statement which called on the flag-bearer of the party, Nana Akufo-Addo, not to allow Joe Danquah to accompany him on his tour of the area.
Nananom stated that ever since Joe Danquah was elected as MP to represent the Tain Constituency, he has persistently and consistently exhibited gross disrespect for them.
Due to his reprehensible conduct, they therefore requested the NPP flag-bearer to exclude him from the campaign in the Tain District.
The secretary to the chiefs, Moses Adu Kofi, signed the statement, which was headed "Nananom speaks from Tain district".
Meanwhile, the NPP Regional Organiser, Mr. Kofi Darko has stated that nobody can order the executives to replace Hon Joe Danquah, who has been elected according to the constitution of the party. "If any one has anything against our candidate, the fellow should not instruct us to do what he or she wishes", he said.
He added that NPP was a great party with great political thinkers and that no one should think the party could be treated in the way he or she wishes.
According to Mr. Darko, the election of the NPP parliamentary candidate for Tain was devoid of any disturbance, so people should not pay attention to the lies and deceit being peddled around by a section of Chiefs in the area who claim not to recognise Joe Danquah as their MP. Darko told The Chronicle after the abortive meeting that Nana Ayim had told him and other executives in a private meeting that Hon. Joe Danquah has been rebellious to the traditional authorities in the constituency, which demands an apology from him.
Nana Ayim later told The Chronicle in an interview that the abortive meeting was intended for Joe Danquah, his chiefs and the regional executives of the NPP and that it was a mistake that his people extended the invitation to the press.
