Child rights advocate Bright Appiah has welcomed government’s new action plan to check the use of child labour.
It follows yesterday’s launch of the national document plan for the elimination of the worst forms of Child Labour by 2015 by the International Labour Organization in collaboration with the Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare.
According to a report released by the Ghana Statistical Service nearly 20 percent of Ghanaian Children below 15 years are engaged in the practice.
Bright Appiah told Joy News government must show a lot more commitment in dealing with the situation.
He said there are adequate existing laws protecting children but expressed regret that these laws had not been implemented.
He hoped the action plan will bring some impetus on the subject.
