The death toll resulting from the cholera outbreak in the country has risen to 67 with the Greater Accra leading with 36 deaths.Over 5,200 cases have been recorded nationwide, with the Greater Accra leading the table with 4,200, followed by the Central region which has recorded 547 cases with 24 deaths.Awutu Senya district which includes Kasoa and Bawjiase in the Central region has recorded 246 cases with 20 deaths. The Head of Public Specialist at the Ghana Health Services, Dr. Emmanuel Dotse disclosed this in an interview with Adom News on Thursday.Dr. Dotse noted that the cholera outbreak is endemic in highly populated areas like major cities. He therefore advised that people should keep their environment tidy to prevent the spread of the disease.Dr. Dotse observed that few cases have been recorded in Northern Ghana with Jirapa recording the highest cases so far.The Public Health Specialist maintained that cholera treatment is free and urged people with symptoms of the disease to report for early treatment. On March 8th this year it was reported that 17 people had died of cholera, but the Health Minister Joseph Yieleh Chereh attributed the deaths to the heavy rains coupled with poor environmental and hygiene practices. One week down the line the death toll has risen sharply to 67, raising concerns over the approach adopted by the sector ministry to combat the epidemic.Story: Akuamoah Boateng/Adom News
