The Upper West Regional Minster, Ephraim Avea Nsoh, has commended the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for its efforts in promoting human security and peace in the country, but charged it to do more. Speaking at a two-day sensitization workshop on human rights, conflict prevention and management organized by CHRAJ in collaboration with the United Nations Human Security Project (UNHSP), Dr. Avea Nsoh posited that CHRAJ as an independent state institution is mandated to regularly organize workshops to educate the general public on their rights and responsibilities. He therefore described the workshop as appropriate and timely taking into consideration the various chieftaincy and land disputes that are dotted across the country with particular emphasis on the Upper West region. The workshop forms part of efforts by CHRAJ and UNHSP to sensitize people on the need to appreciate the nexus between human rights and conflict management as a basis for ensuring sustainable peace particularly in the northern and Upper Regions. Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner of CHRAJ, Mr. Joseph Whittal in his opening remarks expressed delight at the level of participation by stakeholders. According to him, participants are expected to come up with action plans related to real life situations concerning conflict situations in their communities to be guided by specific time frame. He added that monitoring would be done to see the extent to which the skills and knowledge acquired is being applied. “The purpose of the training is to provide knowledge and skills to community opinion leaders and some selected public sector security agencies. Primarily, it is a Human Security Project between CHRAJ and the UN system in Ghana that will help the people know how to prevent and manage conflicts should they arise”, he added. The Commissioner further explained that chieftaincy and land disputes were mainly responsible for conflicts recorded in the municipality, hence the need to involve participants who play vital roles in promoting peace in the society in such workshops. “Each of those people (participants) you see at the workshop come from a community and is an opinion leader whose word is good enough that when there is a likelihood of any conflict, he or she can step in to use the skills acquired to help avert the situation”. Mr. Whittal concluded saying the entire initiative is about giving people the opportunity to resolve their own problems. Participants of the event included officials from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Wa Municipal Assembly as well as Traditional leaders and Assemblymen in the municipality.
