Akosua Asaa Manu, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for Adentan constituency in the Greater Accra region, has challenged Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to take a stand against what she calls a threat to Ghana’s institutional integrity and international reputation.
Her remarks come in the wake of the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, which she believes is being handled in a manner that discredits the judiciary.
In an open letter issued on Tuesday, 10 June, Madam Manu questioned whether the Vice President would allow “purveyors of injustice” to undermine Ghana’s democratic gains.
“Will you allow purveyors of injustice to tarnish Ghana's reputation and its institutions, or will you rise not just as Vice President, but as a woman who knows what it means to lead against the odds?” she asked.
She criticised the methods employed in pursuing the petitions against the Chief Justice, citing intrusive searches, seizure of personal devices, and media attacks as examples of the erosion of due process.
“The random searches, the seizure of mobile devices, the home invasions, and the synchronised media trials must end,” Manu insisted, expressing alarm over the apparent abuse of state institutions for political ends.
Akosua Manu urged the Vice President to speak up and use her influence to halt the ongoing developments.
Drawing on Naana Jane’s public image as a beacon of integrity, she stressed, “Your voice carries immense weight. Use it, not just for the Chief Justice, but for justice itself.”
She further warned that the government’s intention to introduce new legislation on the removal of a Chief Justice confirms flaws in the current process, and called for the restoration of justice and constitutional order.
