The Committee for Joint Action (CJA) may soon hit the streets again in protest over the controversial retirement benefits for ex-presidents.Mr. Kwesi Pratt, a leading member of the pressure group disclosed this at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday.According to him, the retirement benefit announced by the Chinery Hesse Committee is a testimony of the corruption and profligacy endemic in the erstwhile Kufuor administration.The CJA, he insisted, is outraged by the disclosure and would not rest until the benefits are refined by the Mills administration.The Chinery Hesse Committee recommended two houses, six cars, GH ¢460,000 as gratuity and other benefits for ex-Presidents Kufuor and Rawlings.The two have subsequently kicked against the benefits and have suggested a review.Even though the leadership of Parliament have also hinted they would take a second look into the Committee’s recommendations, speculation is still rife that the house cannot change the contents to the disadvantage of the beneficiaries, once approved by Parliament.Mr. Pratt maintained the group will take all legal means to have the proposed benefits reviewed to meet the economic standards of the country.He argued development economies do not have such retirement benefits for their ex-leaders, adding the proposed benefits do not project ex-President Kufuor as a good role-model.Story by Nathan Gadugah
