The Network Herald on Tuesday reported that a very powerful and incorrigible clique at the Bank of Ghana has over the years been secretly returning ‘old and retired’ cedi notes meant for destruction into circulation.According to the paper, those involved have been making unjustifiable gains through their ingenuity, and they do this with the connivance of the well-paid security staff of the bank whose job it is to prevent scams. The Governor of the Bank, Dr Paul Acquah is reported to have called and presided over three of so confidential meetings to contain the lingering menace to the stability of the Ghanaian economy.According to the paper, at pre-arranged periods in the year, the dirty and mutilated paper currency are withdrawn and dispatched to the Bank of Ghana's fortified buildings on the Spintex Road for destruction. However, only apart of the money is destroyed. The clique manages to return some of the very notes earmarked for destruction into circulation. With this information, the Network Herald contacted the Minister of Internal Security, Mr Francis Poku who tried to allay the fears of the public. The paper quotes him as saying that 'We have heard of this alleged ongoing scam. We have put in place some safety measures whilst investigations continue. It is not prudent to make the populace panicky. We know that this is a criminal act and we will get to the bottom of this allegation", the Minister revealed ."In order to eliminate this alleged scam, the Bank of Ghana is acquiring special perforators soon. This will be used by the tellers at the point of payment at the various banks to perforate the old notes before they are packed for destruction. Also, the currency that is being replaced will be destroyed immediately it is paid into the Banks to eliminate any temptation on the part of bank personnel. I have confidence in the Governor of the Bank of Ghana who has tried very hard with government's support to minimize inflation."Source: Network Herald
