The President of the National House of Chiefs, Naa Prof. John Nabila has hinted of a code of ethics to regulate the activities of chiefs in the country. Naa Prof. John Nabila who is also a member of the council of state believes this and other steps being taken by the House, will bring sanity into the chieftaincy institution. He said even though the constitution states clearly that chiefs must not engage in active party politics, it gives room for chiefs to be appointed to serve in positions in the public sector. Prof. Nabila said this on Thursday at the Ghana Speaks Lecture series organised by IDEG under the theme “"Chieftaincy, Peace and Unity: A national Challenge" in Accra. The Wulugu Naba stressed, the survival of the chieftaincy institution depends on the chiefs and royals themselves, challenging them to prove that they are equal to the task when given the opportunity. Prof. Nabila also challenged chiefs in Ghana to be bold enough to act as intermediaries between government and various district assemblies and speak out against developments that disturb their land. He said despite the fact that the constitution may have reduced the role of chiefs to solely traditional and cultural matters, chiefs still have significant roles to play in projecting their respective areas. He urged the chiefs to act as fathers of their areas and promote common interest of the people they serve.
