The Chairman of the Parliamentary sub-Committee on Works and Housing, Samuel Johnfiah has given the thumbs up to an exercise that should see some 2000 illegal structures near the Weija Dam site being demolished.
A combined team of officials from the Ghana Water Company Limited, National Security and the Ga West District Assembly are set to demolish the illegal structures before the end of this week.
The move has been necessitated by concerns over encroachment of the dam site and stone winners’ use of explosives to detonate rocks that protect the dam. The committee last week toured the area and is expected to submit its recommendations to the sector Minister.
Mr Johnfiah told Joy News that the committee has been unable to meet because of the debate of the 2008 Budget in the House.
He called for the prosecution of officials who allowed the construction of the illegal structures.
