The committee investigating bribery allegations involving some judges has made it clear that it will go ahead with its hearing despite legal challenges by the affected judges.
The five-member committee chaired by a Supreme Court judge, Justice Sophia Adinyira has been sued by 14 circuit court judges and magistrates. The plaintiffs are seeking a declaration from the High Court that the action breaches the Judicial Service Act, and want all processes stopped.
Some High Court judges have also filed separate suits in court seeking several reliefs including an injunction against broadcasting of a video showing 34 judges allegedly taking bribes.
But the committee investigating the judicial scandal, described as shameful by former President Kufuor, says its sittings will continue regardless of the suits, Joy News’ Kwakye Afreh Nuamah has reported.
The committee, however, postponed its scheduled hearing today, Tuesday because one of its key members, Nene Amegatcher who is the president of the Ghana Bar Association, is in Kumasi attending the Bar Conference.
It is likely the committee will sit on Friday. Whether the judges challenging the committee’s work and their lawyers appear before it or not, hearing will come off, Afreh said.
But lawyers for the embattled judges and magistrates are unhappy with the decision of the committee.
One of them, Charles Bentum told Joy News that after taking the case to court, “Our expectation is that the committee will halt all proceedings and allow due process to proceed.”
He would not say what action his clients would take in response to the resolute position of the committee, but was convinced the committee's hearing henceforth “will be in contempt of court”.
Investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, whose work has brought the judiciary on its knees was seen in the premises of the Supreme Court today. One of the embattled judges Ivy Heward-Mills was around but had to leave because the committee did not sit.
