Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland KC and president of GUBA Enterprise, Lady Dentaa Amoateng MBE, joined the 25th-anniversary celebration of Ghana’s landmark Meridian Twinning between Tema and the Royal Borough of Greenwich in the UK.

The event, held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, in Greenwich, commemorated the historic partnership first launched by His Royal Highness, the late Prince Philip, at the turn of the millennium.

Dignitaries from the Royal Borough, along with diverse communities from across Greenwich and Woolwich, gathered to celebrate the occasion, reflecting the rich diversity of the Commonwealth Diaspora across London and the UK.

The celebration kicked off with the arrival of an Uber launch that brought Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland KC and Lady Dentaa Amoateng to begin the countdown for the Woolwich Carnival at the Royal Arsenal Woolwich Riverside.

A relay of carnival colours was carried by young flagbearers, including the Commonwealth Peace Flag.

The Ghanaian community in Greenwich raised the Ghana flag at the Town Hall, celebrating the Meridian Twinning event with a feast of fine Ghanaian cuisine during the Mayor’s reception.

Traditional Ghanaian leaders in the UK attended in full regalia to mark the momentous occasion.

Speaking at the event, Patricia Scotland KC said, "It is an immense privilege to be here for the 25th anniversary of the Twinning of Greenwich and Tema at the New Commonwealth Quarter launch in Woolwich. This is especially poignant as we celebrate 75 years of the modern Commonwealth.”

Lady Dentaa Amoateng also emphasized the importance of the partnership, saying, "This is one of the key partnerships we strive to sustain for the benefit of Ghana, leveraging opportunities in the UK and vice-versa.

"We at GUBA will continue to support celebrations and events that project the diversity of Africa and the diaspora positively.”

The event was attended by several notable figures, including The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, 6th Commonwealth Secretary-General; Yvonne Abba-Opoku ACG, newly elected Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich; Councillor Jit Ranabhat and Deputy Mayor Linda Bird; Peter Mann MBE, Chairman of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Commonwealth Society; and Baron Howell of Guildford, among others.
