An aspiring parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North constituency of the ruling National Democratic Congress(NDC) Mohammed Ras Mubarak has issued a stern warning to the leadership of the Greater Accra Regional branch of the NDC not to derail the party’s chances of reclaiming the seat from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Ras Mubarak is unhappy with the conduct of the Greater Accra Regional Vetting Committee of the NDC and says “we won’t allow any communist inferior tactics” in our bid to break the NPP’s 16 years monopoly over the Ablekuma North seat.
The Greater Accra Regional Vetting Committee of the NDC has disqualified four persons from contesting in primaries to elect a representative in orphan constituencies.
The four are the former Chairman of the Confiscated Assets Committee, Mr Carl Wilson, who was vying for the slot in the Weija Constituency; Mr Delali Emmanuel Brempong in the Ayawaso West Wuogon; Augustine Ken Eshum and Andrew Okaikoi, both of Okaikoi North constituency.
On Carl Wilson, a report by the Greater Accra Vetting Committee stated that he could not give tangible reasons for his removal as Chairman of the Confiscated Vehicles Committee (CVC) by the President.
The report said if Carl Wilson is allowed to go through, opponents of the NDC would use his bad record against the party, and Ghanaians would also reject him during the 2012 parliamentary elections.
However, the fate of Ras Mubarak on whether he should be allowed to contest on the ticket of the NDC hangs in the balance since the vetting committee has left it to the National Executives of the party to decide.
The reason given by the Vetting Committee on the Mubarak issue was that in the run up to the NDC delegates congress in Sunyani, his articles and radio utterances were derogatory to President J.E.A Mills and party leadership.
Commenting on the issue on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Ras Mubarak opined that the action by the Vetting Committee is an unnecessary distraction to keep him out of focus.
“My fate is hanging in the balance because I have been critical of government in the past? Is that the kind off institutions we want to build? he quizzed.
Ras Mubarak was startled that the party is using his critic of President Mills against him - something he has apologised for.
Even President Mills “has embraced some of us who had been critical in the past. Who is a regional officer (to say that) somebody else’s fate is in the balance; it is completely unnecessary”.
The former Chairman of the Confiscated Vehicle Allocations Committee, Carl Wilson, who was also on the programme, stated emphatically that he is still a formidable contender in the parliamentary race.
He said since he had not received any official information on his disqualification from the party National Executives, he would continue with his campaign.
Carl Wilson noted the he is the only formidable candidate to win the Weija seat for the NDC in 2012.
