Residents of the Ayigya and Maxima communities in Kumasi are contributing sums of money and building materials towards the construction of police stations in their respective communities.

The move is to curtail the frequent robbery attacks on residents who sometimes receive notices before they are robbed.

Leaders in the communities are collaborating with the police to erect police posts to address crime situation.

Some residents who spoke to Luv News are excited at the initiative.

“I have been robbed four times in this neigbourhood; I received letters from them on several occasions before they came to rob me in my house,” a businessman at Ayigya narrated his ordeal.

A shop close to his supermarket has been shut for over two months because of incessant robbery attacks.

The businessman is among the first to voluntarily donate bags of cement during a fund-raising exercise for the project take-off. Other residents donated building materials and cash.

Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye, at the ground-breaking ceremony, warned the public to desist from shielding family and friends who indulge in criminal activities.

“If you shield a loved one who perpetrate crimes and we mount a search and realize a weapon in your room or compound, you will be arrested as aiding them,” he stated. “After journeying the court back and forth for weeks, I believe you will learn your lessons”.

The Police Commander encouraged the public to support the construction of the police stations.

“Both the government and the police service do not have money to build police stations across the country. I wonder why some politicians do not agree with allowing private individuals to build police stations for the police,” he said.

DCOP Kofi Boakye however cautioned that the police will not favor anyone who shows benevolence to the police in the discharge of duty.

“If you want a police station in your area as soon as possible, then do well to aid the service by building one and we will be glad to help you protect your community,” he noted.

Ayigyahemaa, Nana Akosua Oheneafrewo has offered the land on which both police stations are expected to be situated.

“I have realized the robbery incidents continue to rise so I have decided to offer this land here [Ayigya] and another at Maxima. I hope the robbery will reduce,” she said.

The regional police command has promised to make the Ayigya Police Station a district headquarters when completed by September, 2016.
