Security analyst, Dr Adam Bonaa has called for the interdiction of the Director General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah and Superintendent George Asare.
According to him, the two senior police officers should have been interdicted long before their appearance before the committee probing the alleged plot to oust the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
“These two officers should have been interdicted. If you look at the police C.I. 76, it is very clear that interdiction does not mean dismissal. But you saw that today Supt. Asare was in his police uniform. Ordinarily, I have not seen this before ... it is so disgraceful," Dr Bonaa said in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday.
He cited an instance where an officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr Benjamin Agordzor was interdicted over a leaked tape which implicates him.
Adam Bonaa does not understand why a similar case of a leaked tape to oust the IGP is in the public domain and the officers implicated are still at post.
“My expectation was that the first thing the council ought to have done is to quickly summon the council members – in any case they have indicted them [Police Council], so summon them [police officers]. Interdiction is not dismissal, it means that for now, until all these investigations are conducted thoroughly and you are cleared, you cannot call yourself a police officer.
“If you are not cleared and there are sanctions, the sanctions apply. If you have to remain in the Service, whatever sanctions, it is given to you …,” he said.
Dr Bonaa said saying foul statements about the head of police is an indictment on the Police Council chaired by the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
He added that “the moment you indict the IGP, you are indirectly indicting the entire Police Council. You are indirectly saying that the Police Council that is chaired by the Vice President is not doing its work.”
He, therefore suggested a meeting of the Council to take a decision as the investigation continues.
His comments follow COP Alex Mensah's claim that the IGP is not managing the police well, when the former appeared before the ad-hoc committee set up by parliament to investigate and ascertain the veracity or otherwise of the audio recording on which certain persons discussed the IGP's ouster.
According to COP Alex Mensah, serving officers are unhappy with the IGP's administration.
He went on to say that any independent investigation would affirm this claim.
“It is true. The current IGP is not managing the Service well. And I will not deny this today or tomorrow. I will say it everywhere I go. You can do your own investigation within the Service and you will know.”
Supt. Asare on the other hand, asked for an in-camera hearing to discuss the IGP's performance, saying he cannot do that in public.
