There are several reasons why some married men cheat on their wives.
Discussing the topic 'Why I let her in even though I am married' on JoyFMs Home Affairs with host Edem Knight-Tay on Saturday, two experienced marriage counsellors said that for some men irrespective of what their spouses would do, they would want to explore because it's just their nature.
"They can't be happy or satisfied by one person, so they would want to explore," Kobina Ata-Bedu stated.
"Unfortunately for some men, being able to have multiple women is their own way of managing low self-esteem," he added.
Mr. Ata-Bedu explained that there are other men who step out to have other extra-marital affairs for other reasons.
"The wiring of man is such that he can always have multiple women. The issue of sticking to one person has been cultural and contextual because in our African communities, it's cultural for a man to have multiple wives. So, it is in you. You are born with it. It is in your DNA. It's the West that has a culture of monogamy," Mr. Ata-Bedu clarified.
The counsellor also mentioned that the main reason a man will stay loyal to his wife and not step out is because of the Christ factor.
"They fear God, and they respect themselves."
Answering a question on what sex actually means to a man, Mr. Ata-Bedu further explained that sex to a man is a response to stimuli just as a person responds to the demand to drink water or the need to use the washroom.
"You do it because you have the urge to do it.
"That's why most men who lack the ability to control their stimuli go for prostitutes not because they love them but because they have the urge to indulge in sex," he added.
Another counsellor on the show, Rev. Kofi Boateng (Esq) also enumerated the following as some of the reasons some husbands cheat on their wives.
- Some men go out to cheat because they feel they are men and they can get away with it.
- Others have other women trooping to them because they are successful.
- Some men have problems that they are unable to fix at home, so they go out there to explore their sexuality.
- Some husbands have fantasies they cannot express or explore at home, so they look for other partners to do those things with.
- Some husbands have extra-marital affairs because our culture empowers them. So for them, it's okay to have a wife and a girlfriend at the same time.
- Some men are just unable to overcome temptation. Not everyone can say "No" to the adulterous woman that Proverbs describes.
- Some men are also intimidated by the success of their wives, and because they are looking for validation to feel that they are also men, they engage in extra-marital affairs.
