A circuit court at Fiapre near Sunyani has sentenced Kwabena Appiah, 24, to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing electricity cables belonging to the Volta River Authority (VRA) at Mim.Appiah pleaded guilty and the police are making efforts to apprehend an accomplice.Chief Inspector Kingsley Baafi, the prosecutor, told the court presided by Mr. Yaw Osei Benjamin that on March 6 there was power interruption in Mim.Around the same time a VRA official and a friend who were returning from Goaso to Mim saw the convict in an unregistered vehicle at the Mim cemetery.The accused on seeing the VRA vehicle sped off but the official saw someone carrying some of the cables on a motor bike and chased him till he abandoned the motor bike but run away with the cables.The VRA official took the motor bike and reported the matter to the police.Chief Inspector Baafi said the following morning the VRA officials inspected the main transformers in the town and detected that some of the cables had been cut.They also detected that the company’s water pumping machine had been stolen and when they went to their workshop they found out that some of the cables kept there had been stolen.The prosecutor said police investigations led to the arrest of Appiah.Source: GNA
