An Accra Labour Court on Monday, August 16, 2021, is expected to hear the case filed by the National Labour Commission (NLC) against the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).

The NLC sought an interlocutory injunction to compel UTAG to call off its industrial strike action and resume work.

Members of UTAG, since August 2, 2021, have laid down their tools in demand of an improvement in their conditions of service.

The strike resulted in the cancellation of the end of semester examinations of most state-owned universities.

The NLC, subsequently on Friday, August 6, 2021, secured an interlocutory injunction from the Labour Court to compel UTAG to call off their strike.

UTAG, in reaction, stated that its decision to continue the withdrawal of teaching and related activities is to ensure the government puts some enhanced and progressive proposals on the table.

They said they were determined to continue with the strike if their concerns were not addressed by the government.

In an interview, the president of the Association, Prof. Charles Marfo, disclosed that the Association has filed a case to challenge the injunction brought against them.

He contends that the injunction was not properly served.

He said the NLC's call for the withdrawal of the strike action because UTAG cannot be on strike while at the negotiation table does not hold water since there are no ongoing negotiations between the government and the association.
