The General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Justice Yankson says current reports indicate that the coronavirus affects several organs of the body.
Speaking to Super Morning Show host Kojo Yankson, Thursday, Dr Justice Yankson said although one may recover from the coronavirus, “all tissues of the body in one way or the other would have been impacted by Covid-19.”
As such, previous information which showed that the coronavirus affected only the respiratory organs in the human body has had to be revised due to the lingering effects of the disease reported by recovered patients, Dr Yankson added.
Dr Justice Yankson further indicated that some of the lingering symptoms of Covid-19 vary from person to person.
Some of these effects include “fatigue, muscle weakness, difficulty in breathing and sleeping, hair loss, loss of smell and taste, problems with mobility, issues around mental health; depression, anxiety and some cognitive disorders.”
Persons with underlying health conditions and poor health issues are more susceptible to the above effects listed, he noted.
According to Dr Yankson, these effects are as a result of hyper inflammation that occurs when one goes through the various stages of coronavirus.
His comments come after a report from the Association showed that some men who recovered from the virus complained of erectile dysfunction.
Speaking on the said matter, Dr Yankson said although reports are inconclusive, some men who recover from Covid-19 may be susceptible to infertility.
"When the cells within the testes that are supposed to produce this hormone are also destroyed through the hyper inflammation that Covid brings about, then you have a situation where your testosterone levels are decreased and then generally speaking it will also affect your ability to sustain an erection."
“But the most critical thing about this particular cell being destroyed is that it is where the sperm and all that is produced. So even though it is too early at this point to conclude, scientific thinking is that it could also affect your fertility in itself,” he added.
Consequently, he urged all persons who have identified some post-Covid-19 signs to seek immediate medical attention.
