The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has described as unwarranted and unjustified, the recent fuel price increases.
This is contained in a 20-page document on the party’s alternative energy policies. Among others, the party condemns the collateralization of oil revenue and demands a reduction in electricity tariffs and petroleum prices.
The CPP’s Shadow Minister for Energy, Kwame Jantuah says the real problem is that there are too many taxes and too much inefficiency in the system, which can be addressed to bring prices down.
He said the increase in the prices of petroleum products was particularly worrying because vehicles that cart food from the hinterland to market centres will increase their charges which will have a rippling effect on prices of food items.
Mr Jantuah said a CPP government will not pile such crushing taxes on the citizenry.
He wants the government to stop using the Tema Oil Refinery debt as justification to over tax the people, arguing the debt was accumulated through the policies and decisions of the successive governments.
