The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has congratulated John Dramani Mahama on his election as President of Ghana.
A statement issued in Accra on Wednesday by Ms Samia Yaba Nkrumah, Chair of the Party, also congratulated the Electoral Commission and all political parties that participated in the process.
“We also commend all the people of Ghana who exercised their democratic right to uphold our democracy. It is our sincere hope that all questions of fairness in the process will be resolved quickly so we can maintain a sense of national consensus and cohesion,” it said.
The statement said Ghana has now seen six successful elections since 1992 and it was the hope that the country remains a place of peace and a beacon of democracy in the sub-region.
It expressed thanks to all the members and supporters of the CPP for their support throughout the electoral process adding that in spite of the major setback in the process, the country needs to continue to uphold the principles of truth, sincerity and integrity in all deliberations.
The statement said the result of the election did not however reflect the strengths of contestants, or a rejection of policies but rather on the polarized nature of our politics and its attendant tactical voting.
It explained that the party would hold its first post-election National Executive Council meeting to set out its plans and programmes that would include re-strategizing at the local level, party political education and above all an activist-oriented approach to issues that touch on the lives of all Ghanaians.
“We are also going to pursue our quest to regain the CPP’s confiscated assets,” it said, and called on party faithful to strive valiantly in all their endeavours to continually “champion the aspirations of the people of Ghana whom we exist to serve”.
