Three of the country’s leading political parties have expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the just ended biometric registration exercise. They indicated that in spite of the few skirmishes recorded at some registration centres, the exercise was generally successful. In an interview with Joy News Television, the Deputy Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party, Perry Okudzeto congratulated the Electoral Commission for a good work done. He however charged the EC to ensure an agreement is reached between all the stakeholders involved in the exercise before the mop up exercise is conducted to rule out any suspicion from any quarters. The CPP’s Director of Communication, Nii Armah Akomfra was also of the view that political parties should be involved in deciding the electoral areas that will be involved in the mop up exercise. National Chairman of the PPP, Nii Allotey Brew-Hammond, however enjoined the EC to rope in all the electoral areas or constituencies in the mop up exercise to ensure that all those who were not captured during the exercise get to register instead of a select few. Meanwhile the public appears divided on whether or not there should be a mop up exercise. Geoffrey Williams, an Accra resident told our news team he was satisfied with the registration exercise hence did not think an extension was warranted. But Edem Nyarko who also spoke to our news team was in support of a mop up exercise. Jocelyn Nortey however said she was concerned about the over seven thousand multiple registrations recorded by the EC and therefore did not think the exercise was satisfactory. Kwame Danso another interviewee however argued that the EC did not give prospective voters ample time to participate in the exercise. The 40-day nationwide biometric registration exercise ended on Saturday May 5.
