Programmes Officer at CDD-Ghana, Vera Abena Addo, has described the report of the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) as progressive and forward-looking, particularly for recognising the rights and aspirations of young people in the country.
She made the remarks while speaking on JoyNews’ programme The Law on Sunday, March 8.
According to her, the committee’s decision to dedicate a specific chapter to youth issues in the constitutional reform proposals reflects an important shift in acknowledging the growing demographic significance of young people in Ghana.
“The CRC recognise the right of young people and the youth. They recognise that globally we have a youth batch and if you look at the numbers in Ghana as put out by the Ghana Statistical Service, it is right that the Committee recommended a whole chapter with a provision that will recognise the right of the youth,” she said.
Ms Addo explained that the proposed provisions are intended to complement the existing fundamental human rights framework rather than replace or undermine it.
“This is more like to complement the existing general rights without undermining them,” she noted, adding that the recommendation reflects a broader recognition of the need for sustained dialogue around youth inclusion in governance and national development.
“For me, this is a recognition of a conversation around youth development and youth empowerment, and it is commendable because it is forward-looking and progressive,” she added.
The Constitution Review Committee (CRC), chaired by Henry Kwasi Prempeh, was constituted to review aspects of Ghana’s constitutional framework and propose reforms aimed at strengthening democratic governance and inclusiveness.
