A deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu has said the creation of 45 constituencies by the Electoral Commission in the run up to the December general elections, is a 'recipe for chaos'.
According to John Boadu, the Electoral Commission is under no obligation to push through the creation of the constituencies, which would be eligible to contest in the upcoming general elections.
The Electoral Commission earlier this week was compelled to withdraw the Constitutional Instrument (CI) 73 which was to create the new constituencies, after numerous errors were cited in the document.
The EC immediately laid an amended CI before parliament and is expected to mature after 21 sitting days of parliament.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Friday, John Boadu said the 2012 election is too close for the EC to create any constituency to contest in the polls.
He added that per the amended CI laid before parliament, the CI is likely to mature sometime in September, that is two months to the elections, which according to him, is too short for fresh parliamentary candidates to get to know their constituents, let alone campaign effectively.
He further dismissed assertions that the creation of new constituencies was to enable developmental projects to be spread to such new constituencies.
According to him, MPs per the constitution are not responsible for executing developmental projects but rather District Assemblies.
The NPP's Deputy Communications Director also cited that, the desperation to push through the new constituencies smacks of some hidden political interference from government.
He called on President Mahama to interfere in the process which he said has the possibility of destabilizing the country.
But Managing of Editor the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt who also appeared on the programme said inasmuch as there is the need to analyze the factors that the EC employs in creating new constituencies, every citizen has the right to be represented in parliament as well.
Kwesi Pratt stated that John Boadu’s call on President Mahama to intervene in the creation of the constituencies, amounts to Executive interference in the work of the EC.
He said such interference does not help Ghana’s growing democracy and must not be entertained.
