The Nanumba North District Security Council has imposed a 12-hour curfew on Bimbilla after sporadic shooting in the town Thursday evening left one person dead.
"As of now DISSEC has imposed a curfew from 6pm to 6am. The Police are patrolling the town", the Crime Officer for Bimbilla, ASP Owusu Dwomoh told Joy News.
The shooting was triggered by a disagreement between the two factions of the Bimbilla paramouncy over the place of burial of the late chief of the town, Nakpana Salifu Dawunide.
The chief who died on Wednesday morning at the Tamale teaching hospital was to be buried in the town but the Andani faction is said to have opposed this decision.
This resulted in gunshots ringing through the town for almost an hour. ASP Owusu Dwomoh told JOY NEWS, 20 persons have been arrested.
"When the other faction started firing, the other retaliated. We had information that one person has died. We found him dead in a room covered with a cloth. He is a male adult between 30 to 35 years," he stated
ASP Owusu Dwomoh also revealed, one locally manufactured rifle, a locally made pistol and an AK-47 have been retrieved.
"Yesterday at a meeting, Andani faction stuck to their ground, that they will not allow the body to be buried in the township, they claim that he is not a chief whiles the meeting was going on we heard sporadic shooting", ASP Owusu Dwomoh explained.
The two factions are already engaged in a 5-year kingship case which is still pending at the Northern Regional House of Chiefs.
