The Ghana Police Service has arrested 12 individuals linked to various acts of election-related violence, including the arson attack on the Electoral Commission (EC) office at Damongo in the Savannah Region.
The arrests follow an incident in the Damongo Municipal Constituency, where an agitated group of young people, frustrated by delays in the declaration of election results, set the EC office ablaze.
The fire caused extensive damage to the structure and its contents, rendering the building unusable.
Eyewitnesses reported that the protesters stormed the EC premises in anger, demanding prompt action from election officials before resorting to the destructive act.
The fire quickly engulfed the office, destroying key electoral materials and records.
In a statement, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of the Police Public Affairs Directorate, confirmed the arrests and provided updates on ongoing investigations.
"Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspects were involved in the arson at the EC office in Damongo, as well as damage to other state assets, including residences of district chief executives in certain areas," she disclosed.
The statement also highlighted other criminal acts allegedly committed by the suspects, including the break-in at the School Feeding Programme warehouse in Tamale, where food supplies were stolen.
Footage from the attacks, vandalism, and looting is currently being reviewed by investigators to identify and prosecute all culprits.
The police have assured the public that officers are stationed at key locations, with intensified patrols to ensure peace and security.
Citizens have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as investigations progress.
