Special schools in the country could soon be without teachers, as many of the teachers are refusing to go back after upgrading their skills at the universities. Many of the teachers prefer to go to Senior High Schools to continue their teaching since they are motivated more at the SHS than at the Special Schools. Martin Goza, Head of Three Kings Special School for the Mentally Handicapped at Battor in the North Tongu District of the Volta region disclosed this to Adom News in an interview, when Kwaku Owusu Frimpong, a Ghanaian journalist living in the United Kingdom visited the school to present food items and beverages to the inmates on Wednesday. Mr. Goza noted that the non-existence of special packages to motivate the teachers is a disincentive to them because their colleagues at the SHS, earn better in terms of motivation from parents of students, even though they all possess equal qualification. Meanwhile, embargo placed on employment by the government is said to be taking a heavy toll on the school since it is unable to employ non-teaching staff members to support their operations. Mr. Goza is therefore appealing to government to give a special concession to the Ghana Education Service to enable it engage supporting staff for the school since the children there need special care and attention due to their special nature. He said the behavior of one mentally handicapped child is equal to five ordinary children which calls for urgent steps to increase the human resource base at the Special Schools in order to enable them continue to provide the needed care to these children. He also appealed to society and government to support the school’s plan to build a special Olympic stadium in the school for the inmates’ use. He said this has become necessary because children selected from the school to represent Ghana at the 2007 Paralympics in China excelled in the games even though they never got the opportunity to train with modern facilities. Mr. Goza was of the conviction that the children will do better if they had such facilities here for daily use. In a related development, Mr. Kwaku Owusu Frimpong has pledged to support the facility in future, mobilizing resources from some of his colleagues in the UK, to support the school.
