Residents of Danyame Old Town in Kumasi are crying foul over a possible eviction by an alleged private developer who claims ownership of a land they’ve occupied for two centuries.

Many of the over 300 inhabitants fear losing their homes and livelihoods if the eviction takes place.
Some residents who spoke to Adom News said groups of unidentified, heavily built men have been visiting the area, warning them to leave the land.

According to the residents, the men allegedly threaten that excavators will be brought in at night to demolish their houses if they fail to move.
“We have lived here since childhood. Our forefathers built this community more than 200 years ago. If we are asked to leave here, where are we supposed to go?” some residents questioned.

The opinion leader of the community, Opanin Amoa, said the residents are surprised by the situation because they have lived peacefully on the land for over 200 years without any disputes.

“We are living in constant fear because these unknown men keep coming to harass us. Because of that, many of us are afraid to leave our wives, children, and elderly people at home when we go to work. We do not know when they might return and cause harm,” he said.
He appealed for increased security presence in the community, explaining that there have been several occasions when the youth attempted to confront the alleged evacuators.
He warned that the situation could escalate into violence if authorities do not intervene quickly.
A 105-year-old resident, Agya Patrick, who says he has lived in the community all his life, also appealed to the authorities for help. According to him, he does not know any other place he can call home.
“I have lived here for 105 years. I do not know any other hometown. I am appealing to the government and the authorities to intervene,” he said.
Adom news visits Kumasi metropolitan assembly for further clarification which they said it has now comes to their attention so they have launched investigation into the matter to give the public better clarification
