Dr Lord Justice Gyamfi-Fenteng, District Chief Executive for Asante-Akim South has condemned exploitation of children in farming and other income-generating activities at the expense of their education.
He said depriving children access to education was an abuse of their fundamental human right liable to prosecution. He therefore cautioned the perpetrators to desist from the practice.
Dr Gyamfi-Fenteng was speaking at the South Central Ghana Conference of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church camp meeting at Ofoase near Obogu in the Asante-Akim South District.
The six-day meeting was attended by over 800 delegates drawn from 26 branches of the church in Juaso East and West districts.
He said the district assembly was instituting measures to curb child labour in the area and appealed to parents, chiefs and opinion leaders to collaborate with the assembly in its efforts to combat the menace.
He said churches played instrumental roles in the socio-economic development of the nation and urged the church to instill sense of nationalism in its members.
Pastor Stephen Oppong Addo, Fomena District Pastor, appealed to members of the church to partake in communal activities in their communities.
He said being a Christian did not mean shirking one's civic responsibilities and urged them to be actively involved in matters of national interest.Source: GNA
