The Defence Minister nominee, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, has vowed to strengthen Ghana’s defence mechanisms to address the growing threat of terrorism in the West African sub-region.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, 28 January, Dr Omane Boamah shared his vision for bolstering the nation’s security infrastructure.
He emphasised the need to complete Ghana’s Fractional Orbital Bombardment Systems (FOB) to enhance early detection and response capabilities against potential threats.
He expressed concern over the escalating terrorism in neighbouring countries, stressing that Ghana must remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding its borders.
“Terrorism has reached our doorstep, and while successive governments have made commendable efforts to curb it, reports of dormant cells indicate that we must not let our guard down,” he stated.
Dr Omane Boamah underscored the significance of advanced technologies like the FOB in protecting the country’s extensive 2,000-kilometre border.
“The FOB systems are critical for ensuring early detection and interception of incursions by terrorist groups. These tools will provide us with the capability to secure our borders effectively,” he explained.
Reaffirming his commitment to national security, Dr Omane Boamah assured the Committee that all necessary measures would be taken to protect the country.
“You have my assurances that we will do everything within our power to safeguard our dear nation from any potential threats,” he concluded.
