The row over the definition of 'frontline health workers' has not been resolved, contrary to assertions by President Akufo-Addo, Deputy General Secretary of Ghana Medical Association says.
Dr. Titus Beyuo said the information that the GMA has across the country is that the definition of the phrase is still problematic.
“It is surprising to hear that he says the definition has been resolved,” Dr. Beyuo told Emefa Apawu on JoyNews’ Beyond the Lockdown, minutes after the president’s assertion.
The row over the definition follows incentive packages introduced for health workers for their role in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.
In April, Akufo-Addo scrapped income tax for all health workers. He further announced a 50 per cent bonus of the basic salary of all frontline health workers in the fight against the raging pandemic.
But what he intended as goodwill soon caused a row following difficulty in identifying who a frontline health worker is.
But as the three month packages expire in three days, Akufo-Addo on Sunday, announced a further three-month extension, adding he has been “assured that discussions over the definition of who qualifies as frontline health workers have now been resolved.”
“All frontline health workers, as defined by the Ministry of Health, will continue to receive the additional allowance of 50 per cent of their basic salary per month, i.e. for July, August and September,” Akufo-Addo said.
