A group of disgruntled youth in Damongo, the capital of the Savannah Region, set the local Electoral Commission (EC) office ablaze on Sunday afternoon.
This follows hours of frustration over delays in announcing the 2024 presidential and parliamentary election results.
Eyewitnesses reported that the agitated youth had initially gathered peacefully outside the EC office, demanding updates on the results after waiting throughout the day with no communication.

Tensions escalated as rumours spread about alleged irregularities in the collation process.
In the absence of timely updates from election officials, the crowd became increasingly restless, culminating in a section of the group forcibly entering the premises and setting it on fire.

Videos shared on social media show flames engulfing the building as plumes of smoke billowed into the sky.

It took time before local authorities and fire services were quickly dispatched to the scene, managing to contain the blaze before it spread to nearby structures.
However, the EC office sustained significant damage, with vital documents and equipment reportedly destroyed.

The Electoral Commission has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, though sources within the body have indicated efforts to expedite the collation and release of results.
This unfortunate incident in Damongo highlights the high stakes and emotions surrounding the 2024 general elections, with citizens across the nation eagerly awaiting the final results.
