A Vice-Chairman of the NDC Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has warned that President Mills could be inadvertently projecting “a vindictive government,” following the dismissal of Dr. Sekou Nkrumah as the acting Coordinator of the National Youth Council.

Dr. Spio Garbrah made the comments in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, on Friday July 16, a day after an official letter terminating Dr. Nkrumah’s appointment was leaked to the media.

Dr. Sekou’s dismissal has sparked a storm of opposition criticism, especially as it came days after the third son of Ghana’s first President, criticised the leadership style of President John Mills, saying the former law lecturer was too weak to lead.

Dr. Spio Garbrah described Sekou’s dismissal as unfortunate, saying the move is bound to send wrong signals.

“It gives some unfortunate impression [that] soon after somebody has made statements that seem critical of the president or the government, that the person’s appointment should be terminated. If his appointment was terminated in February or January based on the facts that they have given before he granted any interview it would be easy to make the case that he is incompetent but the timing is unfortunate and it creates an unfortunate impression of the government.”

Dr Spio Garbrah, himself a known critic of the Mills administration, has on various media platforms slammed the Mills administration over campaign promise failures and called for a more urgent approach to tackling the nation’s problems.

According to Dr. Spio-Garbrah, Sekou’s dismissal coincides with several other situations where outspoken members of the party have been hounded out of office or faced persecution from members of the Mills administration.

He added that Sekou’s dismissal could deepen the perception that the Mills government is intolerant of dissenting views from within.

“If people are invited to comment on the government’s performance and after they comment they are either victimised or in this case their appointments are terminated, it then gives a wrong impression on what the government is trying to do”.
